All my email is gone. Netscape's wiped it for some reason.

2 or more years of it. Email addresses. Story parts. Family stuff. Ebay payments.

All of it.

Some of it I can read in archives, some I probably could have cleaned out before.

The file may be somewhere on the disk. I hope.

Shit.

Double shit.

Back up the entire netscape directory before doing any fossicking around (or the profiles directory, or whatever).

Ack!

It's _probably_ not gone . . .

Could it be a virus?

Which version of Netscape? Find you profiles folder, it's likely all there, but Netscape may have created a new set of mail files. Look in the mail folder in your Netscape profile for a folder with the name of your mail account (e.g. keypoint or whatever), then see if there's another one with ".2" (or maybe just 2) appended on the end.

Something similar used to happen to me every once in a while, until I got rid of Netscape and replaced it with the killer Firefox/Thunderbird combo. It was the only downside to the program.

Do you read alt.dbs by gateway? :(

Gods, I'm sorry. Whether it's actually the case or not, it's an awful feeling. *sympathetic hugs* My ex, decided to format the hard drive once without doing anything to save our mail archives ("The ISP will have it all on their servers, won't they?"), and I lost years of stuff that was important to me; it's a feeling I never want to experience again.

Hopefully it's still there and Netscape's just playing silly buggers - though I echo the suggestion of backing things up before you fossick for it. I don't suppose you've got a backup anywhere that you could potentially restore from?

Good luck. Hopefully it won't come to it, but if needs be, I'd like to think that a fair bit of it should be easy to restore; many of the people I know archive everything they send or receive, and many mailing lists have archives too...

Agh.

Massive data loss like this seems to emulate the grieving process; you look for things that aren't there, and get confusion, just the same, although in me that triggered frustration rather than grief after having my hard drive nuked. :)

Thanks for reminding me to run the backups...

Argh!

Hope you do find it.

(Eudora, Mullberry or other Pop e-mail readers store their e-mail in files that can be backed up -- not sure Netscape actually allows that.)

I've had this happen, it's just lost its links to the user profile. Look in your netscape folder, under profiles and you should find it :)
