1 - How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?
I first read fanfic when I stumbled upon a Dr Who fic for the 1996 movie. I'd of course imagined such things, (and put myself right into the middle of them - who wouldn't!) but hadn't realised other people do it too! Oh god, when I read about "Mary Sues" and author-insertions and all the traps that beginner writers fall for ...
The first fanfic I wrote was a piece for a HP Het Slash competition with rare pairs. Entitled Flaming Christmas Puddings, I also put it on the Restricted Section. I've just noticed it's got a very old and completely out of date email address on it!
What pulled me in? Characters that had backgrounds and histories that were only hinted at. I've rather enjoyed working out "where the hell did they come from?" for a lot of stories - I have fond memories of driving with a friend working out the backgrounds of all the characters in The Boat that Rocked. I adore little slipped bits of information that make you wonder what else a character has done in its life. And I especially like taking a character that has a total of 3 references in an entire series and making them far more interesting, while still sticking with the infomation we have.
( All the questions behind the cut for anyone else interested in playing. )
