We adore communicating with you and, through the wondrous medium of the internet, being a part of so many varied communities. Geology. Fanfic writing. Atheism debates. My Little Pony Cuteness Overloads. The lot.
Unfortunately, as we are (comparatively) a small country, we have a smaller range of IP addresses than, say, the UK or the US. Many of our IP addresses come from the same bank as a number of IP addresses in places where people do naughty things. Like sending spam, and phishing emails.
So from time to time, when we in Australia try to join in conversations, or mailing lists, or join in with serious discussions, or even be part of Christmas Card exchanges, our "Oh yes please include me" emails get put IMMEDIATELY in the Spam folder. This is especially the case if the recipient is using Gmail, but it's been known to happen with other large email providers (yes, Demon.co.uk, I'm looking at you). It also has happened with trying to comment on P. Z. Myer's blog - and I've followed all the steps to be marked "not a spammer", and heard ... nothing. And now it looks like I've missed out on the card exchange that I had a picture made especially, where my details seem to have disappeared into the spam folder of the organiser.
So please, people, check your spam folders from time to time. And Gmail? Please stop assuming that all Australians are spammers.
