So when we found a rat or mouse nest in the dried grass at the bottom of the bore water pump (the bore can't be used because our local groundwater is contaminated) it was necessary to kill off the nest as quickly and humanely as possible.

But why, in a house with 3 males here present, do I have to do it?

I hated it. But it had to be done.

Because explosives weren't involved?

I learnt to kill rats from my Dad. Seeing a rat run down a drainage pipe that exited in the lawn was the cue to get out the petrol, open the lawn end and cover it with a garden sifter thingy so it had ventilation, and make the hole go 'woof'. Explodey things.
