Clearing out old mail.
Jun. 18th, 2008 03:19 pmWhile cleaning up and sorting stuff in Sydney, I found a bundle of postcards I'd bought a couple of years ago, and their assorted stamps. I also found two cards that were supposed to be sent way back in 2005, which have now been sent to their respective intendeds, complete with apologies.
So I headed to the post office to see what could be done about these, and to re-send a fruit cake. You see, I had promised one to
ambitious_wench some time ago, and sent it, but I sent it surface mail. And either there's a custom's officer somewhere in LA with a fat tummy and a contented look, or a California Bear with a smile on its face. Because the package was supposed to take up to 4 months, and it's been 8.
The post office went through my stamps and we worked out how may little denomination stamps I would need to still use the pre-stamped cards (I'm in a postcard exchange group, and it would be a shame not to use them), and then I asked the lady how much the postage for the new cake would be. She first gave the most expensive option (Courier, trackable), and when I had recovered from the cost she quoted, she gave me the other airmail option, which I chose.
Friends, it wasn't until I had paid up and filled out the envelope bits and handed over the goodies and walked out that I realised that she had given me back a piece of paper for tracking purposes. She had given me the courier envelope instead, but charged me at the much lower straight air mail option. And I'm afraid I didn't go back to correct her either. So spank me.
Which is why, with great trepidation, I watched as the parcel sat for a day in the LAX sorting depot. And why I've just looked up the Zip code 95213, which tells me that the cake is being processed at San Joaquin. And hopefully, very very soon, there will be a big notation that says that almost a year after the request was made, the item will be delivered.
I hope it doesn't have to wait as long to be eaten :-)
