At Uni, we have to log in to various systems to get course materials, complete quizzes, check our grades and library fines and other stuff.

System 1 has username [student number] and password [some incomprehensible random thingy] that you may then change to the password of your choosing.

System 2 has username [student number] and unchangeable password of [birth date] where there are no space-making zeros (eg. 1/1/1966)

System 3 has username [student number] and unchangeable password of [birth date] where there are spacemaking zeros (eg. 01/01/1966)

System 4 has username [surname-first-initial] and unchangeable password [student number].

System 5 has username ["s"-student-number] and password [surname], although this password can be changed. However, it doesn't help when in a multicultural university, they misspell surnames on a regular basis. (Poor Mustapha Hassan had his misspelled as "Hassal" and it took a week for him to get into the system)

And System 6 has username [bar code on your student ID card] and unchangeable password [surname].

Is it too much to ask for a standard system? Even just remembering whether to put leading zeros or not in the system you're logging into can be a nightmare.

Ah well. TAFE's standard password for the students was "student". And some of them couldn't even manage that. I suppose I ought to be grateful.
