Yeah, abbreviations can cause issues (my non-understanding of EWE led to "Lucius Malfoy, Torchwood and the Sheep").
I tend to use the usual ones, so there's the Pit of Voles of course.
The Petulant Poetess which has some OC stuff, and one that's been inactive for a while but still worth the look is The Restricted Secion. Straight (ahem) Severus/Hermione at Ashwinder. All these three will require creating an account to read anything over about PG rating. TPP is edited so tends to be very well written.
Your biggest problem is going to be that most not-in-the-books characters paired with Snape are Mary-Sue Author Insertions, and a lot of those are terrible. Not all, admittedly, but a lot.
As to terminology, most are here, but it's missing a few. The main other one you'll see occasionally is MLC which stands for "Marriage Law Challenge", which was started many years ago as a writing idea and has become a Fanfic staple. (That's the "purebloods must marry Muggles" law which gives you a starting point for some interesting pairings).
Be warned. Once you step into this pond it's really hard to get out. You'll start wondering things like "How much Petunia/Snape slash is there out there?" (46 on the Pit, more elsewhere), and "What's the oddest Harry Potter Crossover?" (if you're feeling daring, there's a lot. Browse at your own risk.)
