[livejournal.com profile] dogorcuton is getting very old, very fast. He's having trouble walking, can't see very well, can't hear much either, and spends a lot of time snoozing.

Most times he can't find his way out the back to pee, so we're doing a lot of cleaning up after him.

The vet today took some blood, and is checking to see if Cuton's kidneys can handle a higher anti-inflammatory, which will help with the walking.

The poor old thing is shivering a lot of the time, and we think it's more pain and unsteadiness than cold. And his tail?

His tail barely wags any more. Those who met him would know that Cuton's tail is usually on full-bore, all the time. Now? A pathetic wiggle.

Mind you, at the Vet, he perked right up and was wanting to go exploring. And he crapped on the floor, so that part of him is working well.

As is his sense of smell... sort of. He got some chicken today. It disappeared as if inhaled.

But ... yes. He's getting old. And then I remembered this. Which is making me cry.

I love you, Cuton. Even if you stole all that chocolate. And all those danishes. And the cheese. And the whole Christmas Cake. And left your smelly bone in the wardrobe...

It's a hard thing to say... a hard thing to do... but

It really comes down to a simple question... is Cuton happy? More often than not? Or not??

It's one thing to want him to stick around because of what he means to all of you ~ & to those of us who have known him ~ but it's quite another to ignore discomfort... And being cruel to be kind is far from your Nature

It's always an alarming & unfair thing to compare dog years to human ones... It's a blink of an eye to us, but it's a whole lifetime for them. The only pet that outlives us is a Galapagos tortoise & they're nowhere near as much fun to play 'Fetch' with... unless you have the rest of the day off... & even then only if you threw the stick at about 6.30 am

If Cuton is still happy to be here, then all's well for a while. If not........................................................

I'm so sorry. It's so hard watching them grow from babies to extreme old age in such a short space of time.

love

As our dog is about the same age I know how you feel, although Girl is in much better shape.

I hope you can make your little puppy as comfortable as possible.

Pets you both. When my dear departed Woodruff had similar issues, I told the vet to order the meds, forget the blood tests. It was more important that he was pain free. After some fussing, vet did order meds and Woodruff had a few more years of comfortable living with no sign of kidney problems. Then came the day when he woke crying. I crushed some codeine into a bowl of chicken and booked appt with vet for his last journey. I did the mopping/scooping thing for a most of the last two years. He was happy. Good luck.

Hello, Lovely. I share your pain. Gemma isn't that far behind, and suffers from similar ailments. It seems like only a few years ago you and I were joking about letting Remus near Cuton at our first AusGather togther.

Surely its not so long? Or maybe I'm getting old too.

Hugs and much love to you and the cake thief.
