are just a source of information, and as they're 2-dimensional, they can hold a lot more than a barcode.

You can read them with a QR reader on your smartphone (easily downloaded), or pop it into a QR web reader. Most of the time, the QR code will just hold a URL - for instance, if you're looking at a picture of a house for sale, the QR code attached will be the real estate agents' web page for the house's listing.

You can, though, put just straight text into a QR code.
