They think they know all the answers.
May. 19th, 2003 07:49 amThe following information comes from a test about Sex and Gender issues, to be found at This site .
I got rather annoyed at it, though.
It assumes that you're male to start with. Apart from the whole "9 1/2 weeks" business suit, bound breasts and wig routine, girls often dress in so-called "boys clothes". As an 11 year old I was tall, skinny, had neck-length hair and was mistaken for a boy pretty often, so I included that in the quiz.
It now assumes I'm a cross-dresser.
I also got very annoyed because we're having hassles with Norton's not wanting to display images that might be ads, so it was difficult to do a lot of the picture-based questions.
You believe you have mild conflicts about your gender identity.
Er.... no. I know I have masculine traits. They're easily explained becuase the physical indication (lengthening of the ring finger in comparison to the index finger) that shows I probably had a large amount of testosterone while inside my mother, but I know I'm female and don't have a problem with it. But the test questions seemed to decide that if you weren't worried about the whole male/female thing then you wanted to be the opposite.
Questions like :
You have to take an aptitude test. You get one week to study up and get to choose the subject:
* Geometry or Science
* Science or Math
* History or Science
* English or History
* English or Literature
were difficult because I like ALL of them.
At what age did you become aware of a difference between the sexes?
* About age 15
* About age 12
* About age 9
* About age 7
* About age 5
Er... considering so much of the quiz so far has been about thought processes, do you mean like "Boys have bits and girls don't" or do you mean "Boys think differently"? I realised the "bits" bit at about 3. Most kids do.
Have you ever been caught, found out, punished, or discovered engaging in something usually regarded for the opposite sex?
* No.
* Maybe once.
* There have been a couple of incidents.
* Yes, and it caused you some problems.
* You don't even bother trying to hide, you're okay with it.
What - like playing on the Jungle Gym at school, which (in 1970) was only for the boys?
And I'm afraid a lot of the answers for the freminine side seemed to be pretty negative, which was putting me off the whole thing anyway.
When you you remove hair, you remove it from
* Just the face
* Face and maybe back or chest
* Face, back or chest, maybe under arms too.
* Mostly legs, maybe arm pits or some elsewhere on body
* Just legs and arm pits.
er... none of the above. The hairbrush, the dog (and the carpet where it seems to end up), the shower drain...
You are in grade school. The teacher has just given you a gold star for:
* Addition
* Multiplication
* Knowing the Capitol.
* Perfect Spelling.
* The Best Poem.
This is just weird.
You are playing a board game with friends or family, your playing piece is most likely to be:
* The Car
* The wheelbarro
* Whichever piece you happened to grab from the box
* The clothes iron
* The high heel boot
Actually, it's either the Scotty Dog, the cannon or the battleship. Go figure.
You'll notice, too, that there are spelling mistakes and typos in the test.
(sigh)
I'm happy as me,and I'll remain that way, thanks.

I got rather annoyed at it, though.

I am curious about the testosterone/finger length thing, though - how are they connected?
Catherine, looking at her fingers...
Yeah.
Date: 2003-05-18 05:45 pm (UTC)I don't have a cite handy, alas, but it shouldn't be hard to google for - key words are, of course, "testosterone" and "finger length", but try also "autism" if you're interested in where the research has led.
sol.

Seems like it isn't that good a test

Is this better or worse than having TIVO think I'm Gay? For those of you who may not know, I'm a large bearded man. I think I've dressed up as a woman twice in my life, both times for a theatrical production. I'm a bit confused as to why it thinks I'm not heterosexual, since I told it I preferred women.
Is there any way to do this test so that you aren't a crossdresser? Not that I'm going to do it again since it was a tedious experience.

Well, I'm glad that I'm not the only one.
On both of those counts.

Re: Seems like it isn't that good a test
Date: 2003-05-19 11:04 pm (UTC)Some of it I could understand: I know I possess what society would identify as 'feminine' traits (growing up as the only male in the house I may have absorbed a few of them early on in life), and considering I'm bisexual, this may either enforce or dismiss the androgynous aspect of the results.
I'm a tall, lean (bordering on skinny) male, with rather pale skin and long red hair. From a distance I've been mistaken as a female many a time. Due to the nightclubs I go to and the sort of outfits I wear *grin* I tend to fit the androgynous category surprisingly well (people literally don't know if I'm male or female on first glance), so to be androgynous isn't a first. Dressing up in (selected) girls clothing certainly is interesting. ;)
But I did specify I was male, and that I was happy to be one; I had no aspirations to switch genders (as much as I slightly dress as one, or show traits of the opposite sex, or exhibit some homosexual tendancies), and yet it insisted I should consider it, as if I wasn't happy being who I was. I believe I have no conflicts about my gender identity: I never signalled any dissatisfaction over it to begin with.
This test is rather deeply flawed; either that or it was written by a stereotypical straight person, who only interacted with stereotypical straight people, in stereotypical schools, who never went out to live life in any amount whatsoever.

Date: 2003-05-20 04:20 pm (UTC)Cerebrate once wrote that the problems of this world could be traced to the fact that the population expands geometrically and Clue (tm) only expands arithmetically. Looks like the authors might have been shafted on what little was available...

Men of Quilting calendar. Boy, am I in for weird dreams tonight.
