I don't knit, so I'm eyeing sweaters two sizes up for my nieces; growing room is a necessity when planning for Christmas this early (which I due in deference to my budget and desire to spend time with family rather than shop during the holidays).
And therein lies the problem. Because you either choose something that fits perfectly now, in the knowledge its useful time will be limited, or something a couple of sizes too large, knowing it will not sit as nicely to start with but will in a while.
Or there's the third option. But no matter how hard I ask, the parents WILL insist on continuing to feed their children. Who then grow out of the clothes. And the parents get all narky about the whole childhood starvation thing. I can't think why...
Oh, ha! That sounds almost like Shog's idea for "through the bunghole feeding" until the age of eighteen, which so irritated his sister some years ago—but admittedly would do away with the need to know sizes.
Shog always says that she only became offended because she didn't enjoy the barrel as much as he did. *rolls eyes*
