and I hope this level of quoting is OK. He's written a roleplaying game for Mopey Goths, and one of the categories is:

I.T. Support Techie

Prelude
: Once upon a time, you were as other mortals, save only that you nursed that most poisonous of all vipers; an ambition to work with computers. And indeed, you possessed the talent and wisdom to enter that career, and for a while, all was well.

But somewhere, you had an enemy; or you caught the attention of a being with a malovolent wit; or Dark Fate simply turned against you. You know not, although you may still sometimes seek to discover the truth. For you received a "temporary" assignment to the help desk...

...

Roleplaying hints: Sit upright, stare at that screen, and accept whatever you hear on your headset 'phone as natural and inevitable. Whatever human beings do or say can no longer surprise or anger you, although it may provoke varying levels of irony or sarcasm. When away from your desk, try to avoid mentioning what your job is, despite all the problems which this causes...

...

Possessions: Hands-free 'phone headset, a vast collection of plain black t-shirts, a smaller collection of PC games.

It hurts.

Oh, gods, oh gods! Who in their right minds would play this game? Don't techs get enough abuse as it is?

Just remeber, every day that we sit on those phones, waiting for the next call to drop in, some people would say we were asking for it...

Indeed, some would say that.

Some would say you were born to "help" people and somewhere you tripped. Some would say that a parenting instinct was gone awry and now you love the machines more than the humans. Some would insist you stop wearing black pants-suits. ALL of these I have heard from co-workers when I worked in a corporate environment. And I was just, developing a website layout for the company and evaluating the SQL and COBOL skills of new applicants! Okay, so I helped a few people with glitches now and then too, but I wasn't PAID for that.

And here I was wondering what I should do for work when we move ....

Now now.

I think archetype makes a better word. You just have to have enough people write about you.

So true, alas, so true.

I once wrote something related to the subject...
