I should really know better by now...
Jun. 12th, 2005 03:05 am...than to listen to Leonard Cohen when I'm tired and a bit down.
And following it up with Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" was probably not the best idea.
No need to panic, peoples. I'm just on a graveyard shift where 90% of things that could go wrong have done so, and I'm finding it a bit hard to shake off a couple of other annoyances. It's surprising how long a small down can hang around to niggle you when you're a bit tired and the hormones are running low. I'm missing a couple of people more than I thought I would, really want to talk to another who has decided to conveniently not be around, and then...
Our usual office is in a building undergoing maintenance this Queen's Birthday Long Weekend, so they've shuffled all us Phone Monkeys to the nearby Other Monkeypit up the road. As the graveyard shift, we were supposed to start here at 11:30pm Friday Night, with all the phones and systems switched over to the new location an hour before we started.
We got in to find 1 phone on the right queue. One. And the computer at that one desk was password protected so we couldn't get in.
There are *two* of us on the Graves, so for the first two hours I spent most of it trying to analyse the map of the floor, and get a vague idea what phones were useable. At 1 am the phones suddenly switched over, and as a queue shows up by one button flashing, we set up a dummy queue to try and track down which phones were in the right queue. Then to work out which computers at those desks were also usable, as half of them were missing mice and keyboards. Of the 41 phones we're supposed to be able to use, less than 20 are usable.
One other little detail - usually from midnight to 7am the phone calls don't drop into our earpieces automatically - in those hours the handset beeps and we can choose when to answer them. This means that you can take the headphones off for a while. Alas, at this location, the calls are dropping straight in, no warning. Drat.
Oh yes - and because this is a call centre where the people go home at 8pm and don't work weekends, the airconditioning has been switched off. Joy.
And just a minor thing - at our usual centre, we have cable television. During the day it's not usually much good, but at least at night you can catch up on old BBC serials, classic movies and volcano pr0n. Here - no telly.
So this is the second night with uncomfortable headphones, stuffy office, and no volcano pr0n. And that coupled with various other things and the tiredness that comes with graveyards is making me a somewhat down bunny.
Fear not - in two nights time we go back to the usual location.

Date: 2005-06-11 07:33 pm (UTC)I have a large piece of secret knitting to do here, though, which is doing the job nicely. That and a lovelty short story site and we're up to Lou Reed now, so the music isn't quite such a downer. Nah - I just need more chocolate and less coffee and some fresh air.
