From Boing Boing - How to sell Fantasy Art Covers:

Slave girls don't impress art directors. Book publishing does not use pin-up. And breasts are NOT perfectly spherical.

And further down:
As people get older their sense of what is fashionable sometimes ends shortly after college. It’s slightly painful when I see a figure in the painting whose clothing and/or hair is clearly from the 80s.

Although I don't see anything there about not using Fabio for every cover shot...

In other news - to Melbourne with [livejournal.com profile] mr_figgy tomorrow, for an ultra-long weekend. Oh boy!

*sigh*

I only wish people actually stuck to these rules.

That's a fun link, and it's only a little ironic that thsi is the art director for Tor. She doesn't have a single example from Darrell K. Sweet (The Wheel of Time). I wonder why? ---she asked sarcastically.

(Although the repeated advice on having good figure drawings... I think she's trying to tell us something.)

I wonder how often it is, anymore, that the cover art comes first, and the story then written to relate to the image in some way?
