There's a book I read when I was a kid that I've wanted to find ever since. I've posted to
whatwasthatbook, but not one response, and of course now I've realised I should have asked this crowd of bibliophiles for assistance.
The book is at least 30 years old, and possibly more, and written for young adults or older children (I was 10 when I read it). It's set in the UK, and the girl is trying to find out about the mysterious theft of a wagon-load of gold that happened some hundred or more years before. The solution turns out to be that her ancestor (I think) built a fake town in caverns under the real one, and tricked the gold delivery into it. She and her companion (a boy) find this hidden town through a secret passage (although it's rather dilapidated by now).
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
