I think I'm over sugar...
Mar. 10th, 2007 05:44 amand chocolate and especially cake.
For the time being, that is.
I was inspired by the Dalek Chocolate Cake so made
da_norvegicus a Dalek Chocolate Cake for his birthday.
It's about 40cm tall, it has far too much chocolate on it, the kitchen is a disaster area, and hopefully I'll get to bed soon.
The following description is somewhat photo-heavy, and rather smug, but hey, I did it!
So, first I dredged up a couple of clear pics, blew them up to A4 size and threw on a couple of DVDs as background noise.

I didn't want to go too big, or it would take forever. And I didn't want to go too small or the maltesers wouldn't work.

I made a template of some of the more obvious cross-sections to make sure I got the proportions about right. All of them took about 3 episodes of Firefly.

I've made theme cakes before, so had a fairly good idea of what I thought I needed. Alas, it turned out I wasn't quite correct... Made up the cake mix into one deep and one shallow baking tin's worth, each about 50cm x 30cm

Once the layers were cut out roughly, I stacked them to make sure they made sense...

The basic shape was ok. But the camera seems to have a bit of a lean on it...

And then I realised I was missing a piece. So, using an awful lot of frosting to stick it together, I cobbled together what was essentially the torso of the creature. Dratted size hassles.

Once I'd shaped the lower body, I covered it too in frosting, to give a base for the icing and to make sure the cake crumbs didn't come through.

Lined up the Maltesers and all the bits that would need them.

To make a Dalek eye, use a mint stick, a satay skewer and a Malteser. Cut a small slice off the end of the Malteser.

Hard to see here, but I hollowed out the centre of the mint stick to try and hold the skewer better.

The skewer was still sitting a little out of the mint stick so I scraped out a little more and...

Broke the ruddy mint stick. Oh well - luckily I had a spare.

Yes I am aware that it looks like a chocolate Kermit. Maybe that's Kermit's secret identity...

From left to right - the narrow roller base (no, it doesn't move), the body, the thorax (with skewer and eyepiece beside), head, reference pic and abdomen.

Close up of the top half and the plan.

It's a bit dark, but the bottom half.

Now be honest - wouldn't that frighten you if you saw it coming out of a fridge.

The bit in the middle.

What 15 year old could refuse a cake like that?

And now, good readers, it's bloody well bed time. Wake me at midday, please!
