This flower was growing on the sandstone rock flats in Botany Bay, and the photo was taken by [livejournal.com profile] michiexile, whom we dragged all over the end of La Perouse.

I really don't know my Australian flora well enough, and I know Michael would like to know too, so ... what is it please?

Heya, I think I've not found the right mailing list. I'm on AusPolyNet, but I couldn't find the other one. Could you let me know, please?

AusPolyNet is a Yahoo group.

I was searching under "Aus", not "OZ", silly me!

It's pigface, a succulent ground covering thing. It's fairly common on beachfronts because it stores moisture in those oddly shaped leaves, so it thrives in the salty sand that defeats so much else. Don't know how it got the name.

Do I get a cookie? Oh wait, I do - I'm planning to drag out your Anzac recipe and play with it in a few hours...

Here, have a swedish vanilla dream! (very bubbly, crisp, vanilla flavoured cookies)

*curious*

Should cookies be "bubbly"?

These have sodium bicarbonate added specifically to make the interior have a fractal dimension significantly lower than 3.

In other words, lots and lots of internal bubbles and crevices.

This is why I love you all. I read that and knew EXACLTY what you meant. They sound yummy. mmmmm ... fractal cookies.

That's what I said at the time!

I thought it was a subtle reference to a new Batman villain.

Succulent and ground covering, I got. On the other hand, that's something I could notice on my own too.

However, I did not actually catch you talking about pigface as such. Oh well - communication errors in a medium not amenable to reviewing.

Looks like a hottentot fig to me. It's fairly common on parts of the south coast of England.

OK, so it's yet another blasted invader. Shame, as it looks so pretty.

This is my favourite plant, and I don't consider it's invasive, you can actually control it - especially in your own garden. Because where my parents live, the soil is very sandy, dry and hardly anything grows well. This plant survives, also you can get different colours and variety.

Neat. I just learned something from someone a gagillion miles away in a distant country, that I know by a degree of separation that is just unfathomable.
