"Ex-lease computers - only $600. Modem, disk drives, software included! Fully reconditioned. First 50 buyers get a free holiday."
I was in bitch mode, so I rang. It was obvious from the first few words that the salesgirl was not very experienced.
"It's a Pentium" she announces excitedly.
"What sort of Pentium?"
Pentium one. (Rather less enthusiastically)
"But what sort of Pentium one? a 75? 120?"
(softly) A 133 (more loudly) And it has Windows!
"Windows which? 98? ME? "
Windows 95.
"Which version of 95?"
er.... er.... and you get a hard-drive
"It's a bit hard to run a computer these days without one. How big?"
32 Megabytes and 1.2 Gigabytes of hard-disk!
"And tell me about the software."
You get Lotus Notes, and Wordstar! And a spreadsheet!
"Which one?"
By this time, the poor little thing was almost frantic, so she put me on to her supervisor. Who informed me that they were using Win 95 ver c, and the machine had a new mouse, keyboard and modem. No extra slots for components (I've just realised they never mentioned a sound card, and such a thing would be unlikely in an office setup, so the machines probably don't have them). Upgradeable to Pentium 200 - if you could possibly find the chips which would be really really difficult - I know, we tried a year ago. I forgot to ask about the spreadsheet, but it was probably 20/20.
I was annoyed with a sales scheme that preys upon the ignorant housewife at home trying to get a special deal without knowing that what was being offered would be worse than useless in a home environment, unless all you wanted was a base-line word processor. For that it would work. I doubt if any one of the buyers wanted the computer for that.
"So you mean, that including the new parts for which you would have paid a total of about $100 wholesale, you're offering a $300 computer for $600? I won't today. Goodbye."
