My beautiful Beloved [livejournal.com profile] lederhosen bought me the Ugly Betty DVD set for Frithmas. We wondered whether there was much difference between the Australian release and the US one, as we've been caught out before (The Australian version of Galaxy Quest, for instance, doesn't have the Thermian vocal track version :-( and the Australian CSI First Season DVD doesn't use any of the Who's music).

So far things are fine, except for a couple of times through the episodes something gets bleeped out. We wondered at first if it was a rude word (which, considering the sorts of underdeskhand activities were being portrayed, we wouldn't be surprised), but then we checked IMDB.

Justin Suarez: It's just like Top Model except no one's crying.

The words that were bleeped were "Top Model". And in the other episodes, the things that were being bleeped were also other TV shows' names.

Do any of my US friends have the DVD? Are they able to check that region's version (it's in episode 5 - Fey's Sleigh Ride). We don't remember any bleeping in the episodes as they were broadcast, so this truly looks like a DVD issue.

They were bleeped in the US broadcast versions (and presumably their DVDs as well). I torrented the first series, and the eps were recorded directly from US TV. Looks like they didn't bother unbleeping for the Oz DVD set.

That's really odd. And how did the people in IMDB then know what the actual words were supposed to be?

Not much of a fan of that, but I found something similar on my Young Ones DVD. Originally there was a music bit with Jools Holland and Stewart Copeland performing "Subterranean Homesick Blues". It was cut out completely for the DVD, so well you wouldnt notice unless you've seen it on TV. For the newer boxset version with both seasons and a bonus disc, they managed to get the rights and release it. Not just that, it's not just an expensive region 2 disc, you can get it in Australia for a decent price at the ABC store.

There must be some serious copyright violations involved in continuing this.

Doesn't surprise me ... I recently got my grubby mitts on a region 1 copy of Demolition Man, and all references to Taco Bell were beeped out. Oddly enough (though I was kinda relieved since it's one of the best bits of the movie), the FCC didn't see fit to beep out the scene where Stalone gets his hand full of toilet paper from the ticket machine!!! Snerk.
