Two weeks ago, I found a mobile phone in the ladies' loos at the local mall, and handed it in. It looks like I've just collected back on that karma.

Took [livejournal.com profile] da_norvegicus to pick up supplies for the Horde coming over today, and had my wallet in the front pocket of my jeans. And didn't notice when I got out of the car at the shops that it had dropped on the ground. Realised about 4 minutes later, pelted back to the car and the lady just getting out of her car beside mine said "Oh, two blonde girls just picked it up, and they're taking it to Centre Management".

So I ran down to Centre Management, who had seen no sign of the lasses. I got [livejournal.com profile] da_norvegicus to pay for the groceries, (on promise of repayment) and headed home, certain that the wallet was gone. And you know how it is. It's never the cash (or not mostly). It's the hassle of losing and having to replace the credit card, the ATM card, the licence. It's losing the numbers tucked in the back, and the half-used Travel 10 bus tickets. And the drycleaning docket.

So I headed home and hit the phone to call and cancel said cards. And there was a message there waiting for me, from the ladies who had picked up the wallet, and they were going to be in my area this afternoon and would we like to meet up to hand it back? They hadn't wanted to hand it in at the mall as quite often the things don't get back to where they're meant.

Would we what???!!!!! I met the lovely Cheryl about 10 minutes ago. She refused to take the cash I offered her, so I was glad I had taken her some Yummy Baked Goods as a thank-you instead. And her favourite charity is the RSPCA who are now receiving the reward instead.

So there's the tale. There is some genuine goodness in the world. Cherly, may your beautiful horses give you many years of trouble-free joy, may your truck run for three times as far as expected on the current set of tyres, may your friend Dimson (the other lass) find her mobile phone bill about a third the usual rate, and thank you thank you thank you for your honesty.

This made me smile honey.... But there is one thing coming to mind to say... for everyone.

Pay it forward and keep it going. :-)

I hope that makes sense..

yes, its lovely when things like that happen. Last year l handed in a purse to the Centre Management of a nearby shopping centre and had the very grateful owner (an elderly lady) continually ringing me (i'd left my work number but was on leave at the time) and leaving messages until she finally got through to me. Admittedly she then decided to give me her life story.. but that was ok :-)

It is so lovely when someone restores your faith in humanity. I find that it usually happens when I am only just moments away from giving up others entirely.

That's precisely why I go out of my way to return found wallets. Last week, the Czarina and I found that someone had left her driver's license and credit cards atop an automated postal machine, and we even drove to the address on the license to return them. (The address is currently razed due to the owners building a new house on the lot, but we still mailed the card box back to that locale in the hopes that it'll get forwarded to the owner.) I'd never want to be in that situation, and therefore I make damn sure that nobody else is in that situation if I have any say in the matter.

It's not used, it's just recycled

Similar story, a few years ago i was driving late at night and saw a woman pushing her car off a railway crossing. I pulled into a carpark, got out and went back to give her a hand. What I hadn't realised was my wallet had popped out of my pocket when I got out of the car. I received a letter two days later from the person who had picked it up and I went to their shop to pick it up. Again wouldn't accept a reward but I bought some stuff from the shop.
