Lease signed and moving in on Friday. Electricity set for then, gas possibly Monday, but this isn't a huge problem as I won't be properly in until Sunday night, and I can cope for a day or two. Internets in on Tuesday, so I may be a little quiet Monday. Or maybe not. Truck arranged for Saturday for stuff moving from [livejournal.com profile] lirion, [livejournal.com profile] lokicarbis and a couple of loose bits. Minion being organised too (son of aunt of [livejournal.com profile] lederhosen.

My dear son [livejournal.com profile] da_norvegicus has a coat from Antons, and is now buying a pair of trousers from there too. He's all grown up *sniff*

My glasses prescription has moved from +1.00 to +1.50 which would explain some headaches. But why is the optometrist telling me that my 8 year old frames (with the previous prescription of +0.50) will be too brittle after this time to be made into the new +1.50? Or is it just that selling me new frames is how he makes his profit?

Simple. Frames aren't as well made as they use to be. My metal ones are only 4 years old, but I've broken them twice already simply by putting them on--the right arm keeps snapping off. I don't tug on them or bend them. Simply put them on/take them off by grasping them by the nose piece. What gives?

I bet if the "Made in X" label was still legible, it would indicate they were made in China. 'nuf said.

My current frames are about 7 years old and I can tell they're getting too old to reuse. The plastic on the earpieces has gone brittle and the coating on the metal bit round the eyes is flaking off.

Oh, and one of the hinge springs is utterly destroyed so the leg on that side is held on with crazy glue and beading wire. And both nose pads have broken off and been crazy glued back on.

Yes, Mox, I know I need to get a new pair of glasses.

Most of them (glasses) don't last too long these days. That said I have a pair of Ray Ban sunnies from about 1984 thta I've been able to get the lenses changed 3 times and they are still good as.

If your optometrist is located at a glasses shop or otherwise gets commission of some kind then yes probably, at least that's what my dad would tell you. A couple of years ago he noticed some blurriness in his right eye and saw the optometrist at the local OPSM, who gave him an updated prescription for what was later (properly) diagnosed as a cataract.

In my case, it's because I knock the frames often enough that the nosepiece attachment thingies are re-bent frequently, and are nowhere near their original shape. I'm expecting that within a couple more years I'll need new frames (having had the actual nosepieces (the pad bits) replaced when they cracked (replaced with a softer silicon), and don't ask me how that happened because I don't know and it's not supposed to happen). It's what happened with my previous pair.

The pair before that needed a new arm (IIRC that was the pair that Dad sat on), and the one needed was obsolete and no longer available.
