Knew there was a reason for it.

Redheads feel pain more and are harder to anethesi... ant... are resistant to pain killers Old news to some of you, I'm sure.

But it explains a lot of instances.

...

At the Girly Doctors

"You'll feel a slight tug and no pain..."

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUCH

...

After nose surgery

"So has this helped the pain, or is it still hurting?"

"Still hurting LOTS!"

"I'll try a bit more pethedine... how's that?"

"Still really sore! Could I have a bit more?"

(gives third shot)

"Dammit. No, I can feel my breathing slowing. I'll stop here. Ow."

...

Mammogram for possible lump due to constant mastitis whilst breastfeeding.

"Now this will cause a squeezing and slight discomfort. Hold still."

"OWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!"

(Slight comfort - seeing the stream of milk that shot out and hit the wall opposite, 8 feet away :-)

So, I'm not just a wuss. Or maybe I am. But when I say things hurt, GORRAM IT I MEAN IT!

in other news, no news

So....all men are secretly redheads?

Actually, I'm really not surprised. My own pain tolerance is pretty high, but so is my mother's and my sister's. I suspect such things are genetic :)

My OB nurses swore that natural redheads bleed more, as well.

Apparently, you don't want to be a redhead in a hospital; it's just all-around bad news.

Interesting. It might explain the poor anaesthetic outcome I had when I had Lily. http://sandypawozbun.livejournal.com/183101.html

Having a read beard doesn't make one whit of difference.

Oh gosh.... here goes ramble-itis...

I think pain sensitivity is genetic anyway. My Dad, me and my sister all have really high pain tolerance. Not sure about my other sister as she has hurt herself but not to the degree the rest of us have. Mum I am not sure about either...

But for example I went through getting my appendix out and when I woke up they asked me if I was in pain. I said "No, I'm cold", and they decided to give me a pethidine shot. Came back a few minutes later - how are you feeling and all that - my response "I am still cold." Didn't actually feel in much pain at all - from memory it is no worse than when I did that first big workout at the gym or dance or wherever after a break. I still find it odd they didn't believe me when i said I was cold, considering it was fairly major surgery and I was probably in shock as is the normal response post surgery...

My sister survived with minimal medication when she had fibroids that apparently, by the time they removed them had caused a 5-6cm lateral shift of one of her ovaries - so all the ligaments and everything would have been out of alignment and she was in some pain, but I have met people who in the same condition would be curled up in a foetal position asking for morphine or similar...

So I would believe genetics play a role :D

And talking about dentists, I would strongly recommend laser dentistry if I had to get holes drilled again. I hate the sensation of the normal drill!Plus the anasthetic had bad side effects :(

I just hope that you don't get the side effects of anasthesia plus them not working!

I have a copy of the full article from JADA about the study if you want to read it

Its complicated being a ranga. First of all, most of us have a higher pain tolerance - but when it hurts, it really hurts. Hurts "worse"

We also need more anaesthetics and they take longer to wear off...

Whoo.

Just do what I did, dye your hair blonde before visiting the doctor. You'll feel less pain and you won't need the missing IQ points until you get home.

So, being born from a redhead, but not being one myself, this explains my pain tolerance and dual resistance to pain killers.

Hunh.
