'cause with moving and looking for work and everything, I'm also doing NaNoWriMo.
"You don't suppose he killed someone?"
"In a duel perhaps. Fighting for the honour of his sister, and still forced to flee the country as that still counts as murder."
"That would be it." Eddy's heart beat faster at the thought of a young Charles Watson leaping on his horse and galloping away, his opponent dead on the ground behind him and his sister's reputation cleansed. "Or perhaps he was rescuing her from a bunch of ruffians like those we saw today, and he hit one too hard."
"No, that would have been self-defense." They lay in silence a while longer, the rain outside now pelting down and occasionally hitting the window.
From Eddy's bed was the sound of a sudden intake of air. "You don't suppose... he wouldn't have been caught cheating at cards, do you think?"
"But why would he have called it 'perfect' and 'right' then? Unless it was to get enough money to keep the family."
"No. It would be better to lose the house, or mortgage the lands. Or he could have married an heiress. Lots of people are doing that. And we're leaving with the Baccanta next week, so we can't ask him."
George sat upright and glared at his brother. "We can never ask him. That would be indelicate, insensitive, and most of all ungentlemanly behaviour. Now get some sleep. We've the train journey to Bathurst tomorrow."

Date: 2010-11-01 11:08 pm (UTC)It is *so* nice to be in something where winning is finishing - not first, not last, but just finishing. And thus so many people can win without having pushed anyone else out of that place.
