Yeah, it's a Nano Post. Thanks to some excellent assistance, I know now where things are going. There's this young barrister in Chambers who's a git. And the other secretary has been seeing him on the sly. He's also hinted to Enid that there's more to her boyfriend than she knows. But now the other secretary has collapsed at work, and is dying from puerperal sepsis from a botched abortion.

And then the next several hours had been dark, and empty of everything except the slowly-fading breathing of the dying girl; the bustle of the emergency ward cut off by the curtain as if it were a different world. From time to time nurses came in and did what they could. The doctor only came in once more before the end, when Ruth's breathing was nearly stopped and her moans had been completely replaced by the rattle of mucous in her throat. Enid looked up at him, but the doctor wouldn't meet her eyes, and left without saying a word.
At a quarter past five, Ruth took a deep breath.
Then another.
And then Enid realised there wasn't a third.
