It must be a real pain for people who really are called the same things as famous names. I had a John McCarthy in one of my uni classes, and people were forever making hostage jokes to him.
I went to school with James Bond, and Guide camp with Alice Cooper. Her parents were fans.
I didn't know Gunpower Gertie was fictional, but that would explain why the pirate stuff I've read has lots about Anne Bonney and Mary Reed but nothing about her.
