Deathly Hallows 2
Jul. 14th, 2011 12:21 amOk, I'll be good - I'm cutting here so you don't see spoilers.
Yes, I cried. I cried like the enormous Symp that I am. I cried as things began to happen because I knew where they were going to, and I cried as I saw the consequences of so many wrong choices. And I cried at the last scene because it was the end of it all.
Ahem.
So - serious stuff.
Alan Rickman is utterly wonderful as Snape, the younger Snapes (both Rickman with different makeup, and Benedict Clarke) look the parts, and when Snape goes to Dumbledore to try and save Lily ... *grabs hanky again* ... and then when he gets to Godric's Hollow to find Lily dead *loses it completely and bawls as she's writing this*
There will be a short pause while the blogger gets her emotions back under control.
*sniff* *sniff* *sniff*
Lucius? Poor, poor Lucius. Trying so very hard just to get out of the whole thing with his family in one piece. I tell you, Lucius, you were damned lucky to have Narcissa there to save your nuts, and it will totally make Fanfiction sense to have Narcissa walk out on the marriage afterwards.
Molly Weasley and Minerva McGonagall are the team you want guarding your back at tight moments. Minerva's spell to animate the stone statues around Hogwarts reminded me of Angela Lansbury in "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" casting the substitutiary locomotion spell on the suits of armour to help repel the German Soldiers. I wish I'd heard the spell Minerva actually used.
And Neville definitely could be the Chosen One too - in fact, neither Neville nor Harry would have survived without the other. His grandmother should have been at the battle - and would have been exploding with pride.
Ron and Hermione start making a bit more sense, but I still don't think that pairing really has the connection and strength to survive, epilogue or no epilogue.
The breakout from Gringotts worked well, although I think the goblins got the worst of the deal.
Cameo alert - in the Room of Requirement was a copy of the Il Porcellino statue! Although they didn't rub its nose for luck. Both the Room and Bellatrix's vault worked nicely, as did Hermione!Bellatrix.
Very minor quibbles were those things probably cut due to time constraints. Where was Percy coming back to the family? Fred dying in the explosion? Where was Colin Creevey sneaking back in? In fact, where was the exodus of the junior members of Hogwarts? The fuller version of Albus and Grindewald, as told by Aberforth? And where was the revolt of the Hogwarts House Elves, led by Kreacher? And in the epilogue, where were Teddy and Victoria snogging away?
I was wincing as Nagini went for Snape - although I'm still not sure why it was done in the boatshed instead of the Shrieking Shack. And I cried again when I saw Tonks and Remus dead on the floor.
Abeforth was amazing. I adore CiarĂ¡n Hinds as an actor, but had to stare really hard to recognise him. And he was as taciturn as he needed to be. Beautifully done.
The epilogue worked for me. The aging was well done, the kids looked believable, I was only sorry some of the other families weren't obvious. (I want to know who all those other kids are going to Hogwarts).
We had a couple of minor technical issues (a jump at the beginning, and the film completely jumped the sprockets at the end) but missed nothing.
And it was lovely.
And yes, I'll be going again.

harliquinn drew of me as a rabid Harry Potter Fan-fox.

Date: 2011-07-13 04:17 pm (UTC)The only thing I missed was the army of family members of Hogwarts students and Hogsmeade inhabitants. I think it's a wonderful scene and always makes me cry when reading it.
One thing - after all this talk about 'he has his mother's eyes', could they not have found a little girl with blue eyes to play little Lily? Grown up Lily and Harry both have light blue eyes, while little Lily's eyes were dark brown...

Date: 2011-07-15 03:35 pm (UTC)Did they ever mention Tonks' baby between the cut off announcement in the first half, and then Remus talking about the baby after he died? If so, I missed it. I had at that point thought they had just decided to write the pregnancy out. The Molly/Bella battle got a huge round of applause in our theater. As did Neville chopping Nagini's head off.
Minor quibble - why did they have so many characters disintegrate into little bits when dying?
I really like Kelly MacDonald, and thought she made a wonderful Grey Lady.
All in all I thought this was the movie that stuck the least to the original text, but I enjoyed it on its own standing. Loved the Neville/Luna angle. :0)
