And to start -

Scariest Book/Story You've Ever Read - Elidor by Alan Garner. There's a section in the book when the people trying to come over from the other (mythical) land to ours pour heaps of energy into the one point that the two worlds meet. This causes the place in our world to have horrific static. There's one scene where one of the children in our world is looking at a wall, and the static makes the dust make shapes.

And the child can't look away.

And the shapes become clearer, like a radio being tuned in. And the dust starts making firm edges to the shadow-shapes...

This scene freaked me out at age 10, and I had to read the story with the lights on and my back to the wall and music playing - and that in the daytime.

I saw Alan Garner about 10 years after reading that book. Only in passing. He looked normal. I don't know how...

I always found the bit in Weirdstone Of Brisingamen where they're escaping from the svart (goblin) caves to be quite harrowing. They have to pot-hole their way through narrow caverns under a mountain, and there's descriptions of the panic of not being able to breath underwater in a narrow passage in the dark. Quite terrifying!

Oh god yes. That was a story on "Jackanory" and I loved it! And I've seen the Wizard's Well, too!
