I read the food blog of the amazing Catherine, said blog being contained at [livejournal.com profile] catescates. She either cruelly describes in loving detail what it is she cooked for us a week or so ago, or taunts us with the beautiful vegetables she buys at a local market she introduced us to, the place that also has onion-free pates for [livejournal.com profile] lederhosen and evil cakes and lovely bread and ...

And the only thing I can think of that will stop me feeling so full after reading it is if other friends of mine read it too.

She writes recipes that are gluten-free, egg-free, dairy-free, free-of-all-sorts-of-bits, that are nommyer nommier nommyier more delicious than standard fare, and all of it fits in a budget. Admittedly, what's in season here is going to be 6 months out of kilter with the UK and US - but that's not such a hard thing to deal with.

Oh dear, am I being a bad influence?

Also, it's hardly taunting when you get to eat many of the vegetables in question.

(Lots more good stuff coming in the next couple of weeks, by the way - I'm way ahead in my posting, and feeling very virtuous)

... Between all the staff at dancing, we have gluten-free, dairy-free, MSG-free, lactose intolerant, egg-free, caffeine-free, chocolate-free, whole seeds free, chilli-free, strawberry-free, and some more fruits which I can't remember right now -free. Oh, and we have one vegetarian as well.

There are people who like baking us stuff. The challenge makes us all good guinea pigs, I suppose :P

Yeah, I reckon I could do that (actually, I have done that, though you might have to pick a different thing to marble with if raspberries are out, and you've just made me want to see if I can make a fresh mint cake), but you're right that it's a bit of a guinea-pig game...

If we're at certain interstate dance things, one must add coconut-free and soy-free to the list. We've figured out that it's easy enough if one can drop any one of the food restrictions to add those, but the list otherwise gets to One Too Many :-P

Oy. Yes, I mean, there is rice milk, but that only takes you so far when so many flavours are also out of the occasion.

I suppose there is always confectionery - pectin jellies, caramels, and such, but it's not really the same.

Not to mention that sugar-rich things also fall afoul of people with sugar issues (said sugar issues being why I only ever have small slices...)

I dealt with a dinner party once by doing a number of Asian dishes, such that each guest had one dish they couldn't or wouldn't eat (except for the person who wouldn't eat mushrooms or Green Things, they had two - the mushroom dish and the tofu and green things dish). That made things very easy, although I'll admit that there were no vegetarians that day...

Yes, that's my usual approach too - I do mezze style meals where everyone can eat most of what's on the table and the one or two things they can't have are clearly marked as such.
