We have a visitor. Won't be here for very long, depending on behaviour and such, but we've gone for a 30 day trial of a Roomba.

And it needs a name.

I've been trying to think if there's a My Little Pony who's good at cleaning. Other options are characters that get caught up in spider webs, because this thing gets tangled in all the long hairs around the place.

That, and it's taken 9 passes to finally clean upstairs. Yes, we're slobs. I admit it.

So - a name please, for something hardworking, willing to clean, or to start on what seems like an insurmountable task.

And now to throw on a good video while I clean up downstairs for a while.

(Please leave ideas for the name in the comments)

The obvious: "Jeeves"

Jeeves is good. I second that. Jarvis is another. Otis.

Slayer of Dust Bunnies is also good.

Will keep thinking.

Winky if it acts drunk sometimes. Or otherwise has odd issues.

Dobby. Or if it's no good kreacher.

Is it any good?

If you've got wide open floors and chairs with spread-apart legs, and you tend to keep things fairly neat anyway, it'd be good. My sister-in-law swears by it to keep the dog hair under control.

Our biggest problem with it (apart from the huge cleanup I need to do downstairs before I let it run loose) is that because both my husband and I have long hair, the hairs get caught around the roller brushes and I have to keep cutting it off. That, and the tiny size of the dust bucket on the machine means it takes quite a lot of work to get it *to* work, but it's not impossible. Ask me again in a week.

Dobby is tempting. It already beats its head against the wall on a regular basis. My husband asked if it eats socks too...

Where did you get the Roomba, by the way?

It's one of those television offers. Not an impulse - I'd been thinking of it for about a month, and noticed it was Roomba time on the shopping channel. I'll check the other prices available before we make a decision, but I wanted to try it for a month. $20 is worth it.

I will be interested to hear how it goes. My regular cleaning folks (a couple); his wife died, and I doubt very much he will go back to doing it on his own. So I need to do something to prevent utter filth from taking over my house.

Samwise or just Sam

I can't tell you what made me think of this, but Griselda came to mind and has stuck. Perhaps it's because it sounds like a rather grim, no nonsense Victorian housekeeper's name.

Dobby? Bert, the Chimneysweep in Mary Poppins? Trojan Horse? Rumplesweepskin?

Mine is called Artoo (although I haven’t used it in ages; it worked fine but I got out of the habit while I had a cat because I felt bad scaring her with it). And the robot maid in The Jetsons was named Rosie. Robby and Bender also seem like good choices.

Sisyphus? Call it 'Sissy' for short.

My roomba is dead. The battery is completely shot. I'd get a new battery but I'm not sure they make them for this old model. Oh, well, it never really worked on carpets, only hard floors.

[livejournal.com profile] shiv5468 beat me to it -- I was going to say that since it cleans things, Dobby or Winky seem the obvious choices :)

Or there's Mary Poppins. She always seemed to be tidying things up.

Lightning Dust is an official pony name, but it would be ironic for a slow Roomba.
