Heya - this is a more serious itinerary, as we're booking tickets in the next couple of days.

16th September fly Syd - LAX, then early on the 17th, fly to Manchester, NH. Pick up a hire car and try to remember to drive on the right hand side to Home of the Shoggoth Pond, Maine.

Saturday 17th, Sunday 18th, Monday 19th with the squirrel pair, and then Tuesday off to Mass to give the Mayos a hard time. Friday 23rd down to the bonfire night and the wedding on the 24th, then rest day the 25th before driving south that afternoon to Johnson City.

I need some information here, then. [livejournal.com profile] torin3, [livejournal.com profile] malada and [livejournal.com profile] deor, I need to know your closest airports, and the closest BIG airports. that way I can calculate how to get in and out of your areas. To give you an example, to get to the treerats, we were going to fly to Bangor, about 2 hours drive away. But it turns out it's $500 each to fly there but $200 each to Manchester NH (a three hour drive away.)

Sunday night 25th, Monday 26th with [livejournal.com profile] deor and [livejournal.com profile] malada, and Monday night 26th and Tuesday with [livejournal.com profile] torin3.

We're due to fly out of LAX on Sunday 2nd October evening, so will try and get in on the Tuesday 27th evening or Wednesday 28th morning. Hopefully we can then catch up with the three wise sisters of [livejournal.com profile] skwerlbuddy, [livejournal.com profile] chaos_rose and [livejournal.com profile] darkrosetiger over those days from Wed 28th to Sunday 2nd October.

And then off to Hawaii for some hot lava action, flying from Honoloulou to Sydney on Thursday 6th.

Of course, if any of these dates aren't suitable, please let us know. we'll try and work around as much as possible.

The closest 'BIG' airports are Philadelphia and Newark, which are between an hour and an hour and a half away. The New York City airports are only about 20 miles past the Newark airport, but are probably 1-2 additional hours due to traffic. Newark's 3 letter code is EWR, Philadelphia's is PHL. Let me know if you need anything else.

The closest airport is Binghamton Regional Airport. It's kinda small but real close! Most of the traffic is commuter jets. The nearest *real* airport would be Syracuse which is an hour and a half north of us.

Chances are we'll head south then, to go to Torin's then off through Philadelphia. It looks like the cheapest so far.

Unless the BunMover network will let a symp travel for free?

Doesn't look like you're coming anywhere near me.

Sigh.

Not entirely sure. Baltimore is further south, yes? I know Maryland is south of Pennsylvania, so I'm going to talk to my booking agent tomorrow and see what's available.

That being the case, my dear, what *is* your nearest Big Airport?

Dulles International, Baltimore-Washington International, and Ronald Reagan National are all within public transport range. I have no independent transportation...

For all practical intents and purposes, think of me as "Washington DC" rather than Maryland.

Oh. Dear.

Oh. no.

In May 1976 we never made it to the Air and Space museum because it was being done up for the Bicentennary.

In May 1986 I didn't make it to the Air and Space Museum because my cousin's car overheated and we'd started too late from Harrisburg anyway.

I might just have to try for Third Time Lucky if that's the case. And I know [livejournal.com profile] lederhosen will have my guts for garters if I don't at least try.

Dulles, eh? *mutters and starts hitting the cheap airfare websites again*

I'VE never been to the Air & Space Museum before either. How does this sound for a plan. Monday afternoon, we drive up, and pick you up at [livejournal.com profile] malada & [livejournal.com profile] deor's place, bring you down to our place. Tuesday, Sandy and I take off of work and drive down to the Museum and hook up with [livejournal.com profile] silmaril. And depending on how people want to work it, either stay down there and fly out of BWI, or come back up with us and fly out of PHL. Does that sound reasonable?

Except that we'll have our own hire car, but that sounds wonderful. When the morning gets to something reasonable, I'll ask His Nibs.

I talked to Sandy, if this plan works, both of us can take the personal days. Anything you two would like to eat while you are out here?

How far are you from Binghamton?

Mapquest says 155 miles Binghamton NY, to Perkasie PA.

Say 2-1/2 to 3 hours, depending on road work. Not too bad. Will have to get specific directions to you later.

I was going to suggest malada and I go part-way through PA with the Aussies to meet you, stopping by Wilkes-Barre to pick up some Moxie (assuming that Au. customs doesn't regard it as an Omega violation), but then I remembered they'd have been in Maine already. :-) And it'll probably be easier meeting at a fixed location at least one of us knows well.

So what you're saying is we should load 'em up before we send 'em down your way?

*scribblescribble* You want diet or regular, and how much?

From: [identity profile] deor.livejournal.com
Regular. But Malada and I will probably make a run to Wilkes-Barre sometime this summer to stock up.

It's hard to have too much Moxie ;)

To add what I can to the picture, Baltimore is about a 3 to 3 1/2 hour drive south of us, depending on traffice. DC is about 4 hours. I fly out of BWI when they have cheap enough fares to make it worth the extra 2-3 hours drive time.

I'll have to consult with The Other Squirrel on the least annoying way to get from there to here, then. Manchester NH is close by global standards, but there aren't any convenient roads that go from there to here. Figure minimum 3 hours road time (it's 3 from just outside Boston to Augusta, but that's staying on the turnpike(s) all the way up and Manchester is... over there someplace.

(Where'd I put that atlas?)

At the rate we're going, we ought to be at least moved in by September ;)

Don't feel you have to squash up in one room just to fit us in, either.

From: [identity profile] panacea1.livejournal.com
I'm sure we'll all manage somehow. There's lots of porch, and it probably won't be *too* far below freezing in September... };3

Also, since you're landing here first, you should be aware that all the convenient roads in these parts are toll roads, so it will be to your advantage to have a few dollars' worth of coins and small bills where the driver can reach them. Aldin has the tolls memorized, I don't, so remind us to get that information to you.

No E-Tag option? That's cool. We'll be cooling our heels in LAX for at least a couple of hours, so should be able to exchange a few bills. But yes, please have his Aldinship pass that info on.

I do have one itty bitty small request, though. We've just run out of whipped Maple Syrup (although I have 1 3/4 bottles left of the 3 Jazz and Amber brought out last year). Can we please please please please please go to places that sell the whipped stuff and the sugar and other similar evils?

Please?

I think there is an electronic toll option, but I couldn't figure out where to buy the toll passes (and anyway, I'd just cleaned under my sofa cushions, so I had about two pounds of coins in my handbag).

Toll between Portland and Augusta is 60 cents. There's another toll booth between Portland and the NH line, and one in NH, both of which are a dollar-something. I will pester the squirrel when he gets home, but $5 in change should be plenty if you can't figure out the e-thing. If there is one. (There is one in NY and Mass but I don't recall if it's also valid in Maine. It wouldn't surprise me either way. Things are... different... around here.)

Update:

The Squirrel suggests we pick you guys up in Manchester and you can rent a car when you get up here (Augusta) or we can drive you down to Portland and you can get a car there when you're southbound, given that LAX to anywhere on this coast is a bloody long time in a plane (and this after a transoceanic flight, too). Or you can rent a car and be stubborn about it :D Just let us know.

(Squirrel says: We don't cahll it the Maine Wildahness for nothin'.)

He also says: If you must drive from Manchester, take 101 to I-95 North. Pay toll (50 cents, unless it's gone up). Cross into Maine. Pay toll (about $2). Switch to I-295 in Portland. Pay toll (60 cents). Follow 295 to avoid next two tollbooths on I-95. When 295 merges with 95 N again, pay toll (60 cents). Proceed to Augusta exit 113 and follow directions to be emailed later. ;)

I have an image of an army of squirrels at each toll-booth:

One squad holding up a sign saying "Are you Australians?"

One squad to signal to the guys at the booth.

One sqaud at the booth ready to drop the coins in for us

And one squad on relief, really bored and starting to create mayhem...
