Un-encrypting a Laptop takes about 2 days, and when I don't want anyone to touch it, this is the sign I use.

Hmm, we use Pointsec at work and it only takes 2-3 hours to encrypt a HD. Maybe decrypting is more CPU-intensive.

Encrypting using PGP on our standard machines takes about 4 hours. Decrypting takes about 2 days. Very annoying.

Do they still use the RSA algorithm in PGP? That was one of the coolest things I've ever seen in mathematics, an encryption formula that easily fits on a 3x5 index card but is effectively unbreakable in realistic time.

why do you encrypt your laptop? is it something everyone should do?

It's a work requirement. I work for a company that has Defence Force contracts, and any computer that's taken off site *must* be encrypted so that if it's stolen or lost, people who find it can't read things that might be compromising.

It's generally a good idea if you don't want your secrets out.
