The machine at the mall reckons I've gained nearly 3 kilos in two weeks. Now while this isn't impossible, I find it hard to believe that with swimming and walking and kite-flying on holidays and the usual activities here, that I've gained that much.

Two possibilities:

1) On the contraceptive I'm using the usual female 28 day event has occurred twice in 8 months. This is great, but it may mean I'm a little bloated right now, and in a week it will have gone.

2) The machine which keeps registering me at 1.59m, is inaccurate.

OK, there's no. 3. And I'll be riding the bike tonight. Stage 2 hits today. Fruit and exercise in moderate doses both.

Besides, this is a long-term thing. I'm not expecting miracles in the first few weeks. Just a slow progression. And if the first few steps are backwards, then that's just the run-up.

If I were you I would try to find either a new machine or a set of scales for home, at least that way you will know that it is telling you the truth.

The long and slow path is the best path to be on for these things - you will get there, if I can - then you can too :)

Second on machine second opinions. Perhaps the scale you're using is slowly drifting? I imagine a mall-based piece of equipment might not be as regularly calibrated as, say, a laboratory micrometer. :-)

wipes tears of hilarity from eyes

Oh crumbs - measuring me on a micrometer.

Thanks, Jeff. Lovely image - I'm going to be sniggering at that one for a while.

Another possibility is that if you're excercising enough, you're replacing fat with muscle. Someone who lifts weights told me that muscle is heavier that fat so you'll trim down but get heavier.

I wish.

Alas, although I've done _some_ exercise, it's nowhere enough to make that much difference.

The most weight I've lifted is a full washing basket.

No, really!

Actually, she may be right, Rey. When I began walking regularly, I noticed a jump up in my weight. I also noticed a distinct change in the shape and firmness of my thighs, caves and dairy-air.

I'd say it took about two weeks. And yes, muscle is denser than fat. Frankly, I'd say scrap the weighing altogether, and buy a tape measure. But that's me.

Have you noticed a change in your outlook? I have--walking helps me sleep better at night, helps me recalibrate my mood at work, and generally makes my whole attitude better. And it's cheaper than prozac or a membership at a gym!

Just be sure to have good supportive walking shoes.

And I still have the saggy mommy-belly I did before, but I don't care as much. I feel better about myself in general.

You and me, girl!

Yes, muscle weighs more than fat. The scale may be mis-calibrated. Bloating may be an issue, especially if you've been drinking a lot of liquids.

If you're exercising (walking), any muscle mass you're building right now will lead to an increase in your weight, at which point it will stabilize, because you're not exercising that much, and the increased metabilism will cause your body to utilize the energy it has stored as fat, and you'll lose weight. It is, indeed, a run-up to the final result.

Buying a scale that isn't as heavily abused as the mall scale may help as well. Those in public places get so much abuse, it's a wonder they come up with anything even close to a correct reading.

Finally, if you're drinking liquids, it may help to actually increase your intake. I know, it sounds counter-intuitive, but drinking more can help your body retain less. As your body realizes that it has a steady source of liquid, it stops hoarding it in your tissues, and you loose the "water weight". I've proven this to myself time and again, with every time I try to lose weight.

And no, I didn't forget to weigh in on Sunday last. It was the Super Bowl, you see, and the doctor's office was closed... I did go back and weigh, and officially, I have neither gained nor lost. Which is good. One more week of eating habit reinforcement, and then we start to restrict calories, fat, and whatnot. This plan really works (Weight Watchers Winning Points). A co-worker of my wife's has lost 40 lbs. (18.2 Kg) in the past 4 months, and she looks fabulous.

On the contraceptive I've been using since March, I've had more days _on_ the 28 day event than _off_. So I think that explains my 15kg gain and my inability to shift it, even through heavy exercise.
I keep up the heavy exercise because it makes me feel better, and seem to slow the 'event' down a bit.
Before people start telling me I should have the darn thing removed, other chemical methods do not agree with me, (and believe me I've tried them all....so many I can't remember all their names). That's why I'm willing to put up with the 'inconvenience' and weight gain until the 'male pill' injection is out of clinical trials and on the market.
The reason I went down this avenue, is because when it came up for 'discussion', as it inevitably does, my lovely partner was most put out that there wasn't an equivalent option for him. When I turned to him and said, 'well, its currently in clinical trials and is proving to be incredibly reliable', and got a delightfully positive response, I thought, well, it won't be forever......so I'll put up with a lot for a couple of years, and then he'll be happy to take over :-)
Trust is a wonderful thing and he's a lovely, lovely man ;-)
