For those that don't know, my family is not always tolerant of my interest in geology, and more specifically volcanoes.

Conversation in my home.

Me: Guys, I want to go to Skaergaard one day. (Inspired by a post by Fitzgabbro.)

[livejournal.com profile] lederhosen: Is it a volcano?

Me; No...

[livejournal.com profile] da_norvegicus: Is it about geology?

Me: It might be. But it's not a volcano. It's a magma chamber whose magma never broke the surface, so it never became a volcano.

[livejournal.com profile] lederhosen: It's a volcano.

Me: But it hadn't been born yet!

[livejournal.com profile] da_norvegicus: A volcano is a volcano from the point of conception.

Room dissolves in arguments and laughter

Would a video of a volcano being concieved constitute geological porn?

The general expression around our house for those documentaries with lots and lots of hot lava shots and very little actual information is "Volcano Porn" - so ohhhh yeah baby :-)

(chuckle) So, you're saying that when you visited us, we should have dragged you up to see Katahdin, Maine's tallest mountain, huh?

Definitely. So I'll just have to come back and see it then. i have plans that involve an autumn, a couple of tents and a long weekend or so...

That would take a LOT of coordination. You need to reserve a tent spot in Baxter State Park at least 3 months in advance. Not as bad as it use to be. It use to be they'd open up all reservations for the year on January 1 and you had to do it in person at park HQ. People would tent out in the winter weather for days in order to get the exact site/day they wanted for the summer/fall.

The park closes to overnight camping the second weekend in October. Trust me, if you want to climb it, you want to do it in late summer at the latest. You need a minimum of 8 hours to pull it off, provided you're in really good shape (which I'm not anymore). I've made five attempts in my lifetime and only made it to the peak once.

Oh I don't have to go all the way to the top. Truth be told, I couldn't, these days. But a camp at the bottom and a few days enjoying the air and the leaves and the rocks ... If I'm coming over, I'd definitely have at least 3 months notice.

Is there somewhere similar that would provide the above but would still be open as the leaves change?

Start/end point of the Appalachian trail! Sometimes I've been tempted to try it, but with my nature skills I'd probably end up falling into a rattlesnake nest and they wouldn't find my body for years.

Is that something you should be saying in a place where [livejournal.com profile] notasquirrel can hear you?

He's into insects right now, not snakes. I hope it's just something like bees, not the creepy ones that lay eggs in your ears that hatch and eat your brain.
