For those that don't know, my family is not always tolerant of my interest in geology, and more specifically volcanoes.


Conversation in my home.

Me: Guys, I want to go to Skaergaard one day. (Inspired by a post by Fitzgabbro.)

lederhosen: Is it a volcano?

Me; No...

da_norvegicus: Is it about geology?

Me: It might be. But it's not a volcano. It's a magma chamber whose magma never broke the surface, so it never became a volcano.

lederhosen: It's a volcano.

Me: But it hadn't been born yet!

da_norvegicus: A volcano is a volcano from the point of conception.

Start/end point of the Appalachian trail! Sometimes I've been tempted to try it, but with my nature skills I'd probably end up falling into a rattlesnake nest and they wouldn't find my body for years.

He's into insects right now, not snakes. I hope it's just something like bees, not the creepy ones that lay eggs in your ears that hatch and eat your brain.
