A post regarding Windows 2000.
Mar. 12th, 2003 10:48 pmA thought that has occurred to me upon the occasion of upgrading the computer to Windows 2000.
I curse Bill gates. I curse him with darkness and with blue screens. I curse him with broken fingers and blistered feet. I curse him with a three-metre aura around him within which machines die and electricity itself fails. I curse his mind that he might never increase his fortune, I curse his hands that he might never again call for an upgraded OS, and I curse his feet that they might not rest calmly until he has walked a metre for every hour of the techies' time he has ever ever wasted.
No, I don't really feel better.
FUCK!!!!!!!
SMEG!!!!
NO SOUND NO SCREEN NO FUCKING MODEM FOR HOURS AND THEN THE NERVE TO TRY AND INSTALL SMEGGING AT&T DRIVERS AND DISABLE NORTONS I DON"T THINK SO!!!!!

Upgrading?
Date: 2003-03-12 05:40 am (UTC)If you're still trying to do that, or even if you've got it working, stop now. Reformat. Install from fresh.
Trust me on this one: that trick never works. If you can get some Microsoft people alone and buy them drinks, they'll even tell you that - the evil internal juggling they have to do to make the old registry resemble the new registry is a very, very long way from reliable. Hell, I wouldn't even try NT4 -> 2000, myself.
Even if it looks like it's working, it *will* go horribly wrong later on, or at the very least be militantly unreliable compared to a fresh install.
*sigh*
I have so felt your pain in the past with this one.

No, I don't want to talk about it ;-/
